Mary Nell (Calliham) Franklin Cox passed away at an Abilene nursing home on Tuesday, November 9, 2010. Private interment will be at the Panhandle Cemetery directed by Boxwell Brothers in Panhandle, Texas. A Memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at First United Methodist Church in Panhandle, Texas at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 13, 2010 with Reverends Jerry Lane and Lewis Holland officiating.
Mary Nell was born August 1, 1929 at home in Conway, Texas to Marion (Proctor) and James Paul Calliham. She attended elementary school in Conway before transferring to Panhandle where she graduated as salutatorian in 1946, Mary Nell then attended Texas Tech College where she was a member of KoShari sorority and majored in Home Economics.
Mary Nell married John Meredith Franklin in Panhandle, Texas on July 27, 1948. They owned Franklin Parts & Supply in Panhandle for many years. John preceded her in death in June, 1991.
Mary Nell and Howard Cox were married in January, 1996. They enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends.
Mary Nell loved playing bridge with friends, doing genealogy research, singing, and participating in church activities. She served on many committees at First United Methodist Church in Panhandle. She volunteered for many years at The High Plains Food Bank in Amarillo and also participated in the Amarillo Civic Chorus.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John; son, Charles Franklin; and a sister, Lola Sue Peck. Mary Nell is survived by her husband, Howard Cox, of Roanoke, Virginia; two daughters Diana Jean Witherspoon of Abilene, Texas and Jennifer Nell Rapstine and husband, Mike of Abilene; one son, James Meredith Franklin and wife, Nancy, of Dalhart, Texas; two sisters, Mauna Loa Cleek of Amarillo, Texas, and Paula Faye Vance and husband, Don of Panhandle; 9 grandchildren: Stephanie Trook and husband, Jason of Lubbock, Texas; Robert Franklin and wife, Melissa of Grady, New Mexico; Beckie Morgan and husband, Jim Bob of Dumas, Texas; Erica Hennigh of Sunray, Texas; John Paul Franklin of Dalhart; Nicholas Franklin of Austin, Texas; Tara Franklin of Amarillo; Emily Rapstine of Dallas, Texas; Elizabeth Rapstine of Abilene; and13 great-grandchildren.
We would like to thank the staff at Windcrest, Hendrick Hospice, and Dr. Sandra Hazelip for all their wonderful care.
Viewing will be from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 12, 2010 at the Boxwell Brothers in Panhandle.
