Phyllis Mildred Hood Newell, 97, of Stahlstown died Friday, April 20, 2007, in Ligonier Gardens.
She was born Feb. 2, 1910, in Stahlstown, a daughter of the late W. Frank and Mable (Roadman) Hood.
She was a member of Stahlstown Trinity United Methodist Church, was a former Donegal Township school board member and was proud to be a member of the DAR. She had been previously employed by Story Brook Forest and was a homemaker and farmer for 70 years as well as selling Avon and Tupperware products. She attended nurse's training after high school, which was put to good use in the raising of her sons. At the age of 58 she had never flown in an airplane and she and her husband made a round trip to Germany to visit one of her sons and his wife. She always enjoyed being involved with scorekeeping and watching her sons along with their father play baseball for the Ligonier Valley Baseball League.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest W. Newell, in 1984, a son, William "Billy" Newell at age 5 in 1934; a grandson, Russell "Rusty" Newell, in 1976, and two brothers, Paul and Grant Hood Sr.
Phyllis is survived by her five sons, Harold Newell and his wife Edith, of Ligonier, Richard Newell and his wife, Linda, of Derry, Frank Newell and his wife, Shirley, of Stahlstown, Robert Newell and his wife, Peggy, of Ligonier, and John Newell and his wife, Linda, of Pittsburgh; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Arlene Hood Pasulka and Carol Hood Hall Alexander, both of Ligonier, and two sisters-in-law, Nettie Hood of Stahlstown and Alma Hood of Greensburg.
Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Snyder Funeral Home Inc. & Crematory, Bell and East Church streets, Ligonier. Additional viewing will be held in Stahlstown United Methodist Church from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Monday, the time of service with the Rev. Audrey J. Bell officiating.
Interment will follow in Stahlstown Cemetery.
