Dennis C. Benton, 78, died Thursday afternoon in Bulloch Memorial Hospital after a short illness. The Wheeler County native had been living in Evans County for the past 34 years. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church and served as a deacon for a number of years. He was a retired carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Effie C. Benton of Claxton; two sons, Delmus Benton of Register and Drexel Benton of Thomasville; two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Brown of Claxton and Mrs. Pansy Lynn of Manassas; two brothers, Virgil Benton of Bellville and Van Benton of Savannah; a sister, Mrs. Mary McNeal of Claxton; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday in the NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Perry Hearn officiating. Burial was in Northside Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ander Foskey, Clarence Benton, William Benton, Ray Snellgrove, Harold Foskey and Aaron Clements.

NeSmith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
