Edgar played football for Boonville High School from 1926 through 1928 earning all all-state honorable mention in l928 as well as being elected member of the famous point a minute team. Coach Herman Byers called him the best lineman he had ever seen. He also played three years of varsity football while he attended Oakland City University and ably served as the team captain his senior year. After graduation from college, Edgar accepted a teaching position at Folsomville High School where he also coached football. He later joined his father, Adam Luther Baum, as partner in the grocery business. The words A. L. Baum and year 1906 still remains atop the building located at the south west corner of the square which memorializes the location which Edgar began his business career. He served on the Selective Service Board as well as serving in the U.S. Navy, teaching electronics during World War II. After the war, he returned home to resume his involvement in the grocery business. After his father's retirement, Edgar successfully operated Baum's Key Market until his retirement.
"Bummer" was always a staunch supporter of Boonville athletics joining John Greer in coaching little league football and faithfully attending BHS football games until health issues prohibited his attendance at which time he tuned in to WBNL to hear the action. He was honored at the celebration of 100 years of Boonville Football for both his achievements as a player as well as his support of the team. Honored for prowess as a football star, he was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in l992 and was also inducted into the Oakland City University Hall of Fame.
Edgar was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church and member and supporter of many charitable organizations which include the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Free and Accepted Mason, Forty/Eight, Hadi Shrine Temple, Elks, Kiwanis, American Legion, and Warrick Chamber of Commerce and a 60-year Member of Hebron Lodge Order of Odd Fellows #144.
