Gayle attended school in Glenvil and graduated in 1939, he then attended Hastings College for one year. He proudly served in the United States Army, during WWII from August 10, 1942 to December 7, 1945, seeing action in Aleutian Islands, and later trained several companies of Japanese-American soldiers at Camp Blanding in Florida. These same soldiers went on to gain notoriety at The Battle of The Bulge. He often spoke of his adventures in combat and in training cycles.
He married Anne C. Strom on October 16, 1954 in Philadelphia, PA, Anne passed away December 2, 2005, they made their home in Glenvil, NE. They had sons, Jim, Steve and Dan.
Gayle worked for the United States Postal Service as Postmaster in Glenvil, NE for 31 years. He was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church in Glenvil, NE and later in Hastings, NE.
In his retirement he enjoyed his flower and vegetable gardens, planting trees, his poultry and all things that had to do with nature and God's creation, as well as spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by sons, Jim and wife Chris of North Platte, NE, and Dan and wife Karen of Omaha, NE, grandchildren, Amy Conner of North Platte, NE, Jud Conner, of Sioux City, IA, Rachel and Zach Conner and Matt Thomas all of Omaha, NE, sister, Ruth Conner of Glenvil, NE brother, Denny Conner of Central City, NE, and a host of extended family and friends.
