Raised in Boston. Traveled to Chicago at 18 in 1840 with other members of the Universalist movement in Boston. Married on Christmas Eve 1840 to James H. Trader, a lawyer, in Chicago (later divorced). Traveled the mid-western court circuit with her family. Lived in Missouri with her family by 1865, eventually settling in St. Louis. She preserved her father's bible and each generation handed it down.
