Elsie was born in Newton, Wisconsin to Henry & Mary Grosshuesch. Both parents were born in Germany, as were several of her siblings. Her mother died shortly after her birth. In the 1860 census she is age 3, and the youngest of 6 children. The family consisted of her father, widowed grandmother Margaret Grosshuesch, and 5 older siblings. In 1870 her father remains a widow, with 5 children at home, Elsie is age 14. Elsie's father Henry was remarried in the 1880 census, age 63, and had moved to Minnesota.

Marriage:
Elisa Grosshusch was married in Sheboygan Co., May 27 1880 (per Wisc. Hist. Society marriage index), to Fred Maurer. They appear in the 1880 census as Fred & Elise, in Herman, Sheboygan Co., Wisconsin. The couple had 5 children: Charles, Jacob, Ida, Minnie, & Henry. Charles & Jacob became ministers.
