His father, Thomas James, died when William Reese James was just 10 years old, leaving a wife and 6 small children. Will was the oldest.

According to Albert James, his brother, Will worked on a farm at Uinta until he went to Evanston to work in the railroad shops, worked as a pumper, started firing then went back pumping again. Then he quit the railroad and went in the military.

William Reese JAMES served as a private in the U.S. Marine Corps. He enlisted 14 February 1903 at Sacramento, California, to serve for 4 years. He was, however, discharged just a few months later (30 June 1903) upon report of medical survey, disease or injury not in the line of duty. Good character.

According to his brother, he caught malaria fever while in the military.

He had gray eyes, black hair, a dark complexion and stood 5 feet 10-1/2 inches.

Exactly one year after being discharged from the military, he died from heart disease. At the time of his death he as was age 22 years, 9 months, and 5 days.

He never married.
