On Friday morning, November 5, 2010, Alva Alan Hunter walked into the arms of his sweetheart, Ruth, to celebrate their sixty-eighth wedding anniversary together in Eternity.
Alan was born June 19, 1923 in American Fork, Utah to George Stanley and Fern Green Hunter, the third of five sons. Alan grew up on the family farm and attended schools in American Fork, graduating from American Fork High School.
He married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Parker, on November 5, 1942 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and together they had five sons and one daughter.
Shortly after marriage, Alan left his young family to serve in Italy during WWII and upon his return started work at Geneva Steel Plant in the Rolling Mill, retiring from there in 1985.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in the Elder's Quorum Presidency, Bishopric, and High Council. His strong testimony of the Gospel sustained him as he experienced the trials that would come into his life.
He has always been an amazing example of gentleness, kindness, and patience. Alan and Ruth enjoyed serving together for five years as Ordinance workers in the Provo Temple. They were avid BYU fans and long time members of the Cougar Club. In 2009, Alan was honored as BYU's "Thursday's Hero".
In his earlier years he enjoyed hunting, camping, horse riding, and farming, but has always been the happiest surrounded by his large and loving family.
His dear Ruth died in 2008, and he is survived by their children: Brenda Stringer Hunter, Am. Fork; George (Merrilee) Hunter, Cedar Hills; Jerry (Nicki) Hunter, Lehi; Don (Jacki) Hunter, Highland; Valerie (Curtis) Jeppesen, St. Anthony, ID; and Larry (Annette) Hunter, Smithfield; twenty-eight grandchildren; thirty-seven great-grandchildren, with three more "expected"; a brother Kenneth (Ginger) Hunter, American Fork. He is preceded in death by his Eternal companion, Ruth; their oldest son, Dale Hunter; two grandsons, Regan Hunter and Brady Hunter; and by his three brothers, Leland, Stanley, and Ralph Hunter.
The family wishes to express love and appreciation to Brackus, Lacey, and Zoey Hunter for their sweet and tender care of "Grandpa"; and to the attentive staff of Applegate Home Health.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hillcrest Stake Center, 165 North 350 West, American Fork. Friends may call Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Anderson & Sons Mortuary and Monday at the church from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services.
Burial will be in the American Fork Cemetery.
