BIG STONE GAP, Va. — William Ray Bailey, 86, passed away on Friday (July 11, 2008) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was a native of Wise County and was the son of the late Willie R. and Lucy Bailey.

Ray was a member of the First Christian Church for 50-plus years, having served as Sunday school superintendent, deacon, elder and chairman of the board for many years.

Ray retired from Westmoreland Coal Co. in 1983. He is a past president of Stonega Veterans. He served his country in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II.

In addition, Ray was a member of the Big Stone Gap Fire Dept. for 30 years, Past Master of Big Stone Masonic Lodge #208, and Past Patron of Big Stone Gap Order of the Eastern Star #157, member of Kazim Shriners of Roanoke Va. He served as past president of Powell Valley Shrine Club and as secretary-treasurer for many years and as van coordinator, making more than 300 trips to the Shriners Hospitals. Ray was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Wise, Va., and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5715.

In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by three sisters, Martha Agnes (infant), Elma Grenier and Margaret Edenfield; one brother, Kyle Bailey.

He is survived by Mary Agnes Hensley Bailey, his loving wife of 67 years; one daughter, Joyce Ann Gladstone of Greenbelt, Md.; grandchildren, Tammy Lee Gladstone and Dawn Locke of Great Mills, Md., Michelle Gedney and husband, Kevin; and great-granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Gedney, all of Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Faith G. Carnal and husband, Jerry of Dayton Ohio; one brother, Otis L.(Roy) Bailey and wife, Murial of Leander, Tex.; special daughter, Pat Kennedy and husband, Lynn Woodard of Big Stone Gap; special grandsons, Nathan Woodard, Silver Spring, Md. and Tommy Woodard, Blacksburg, Va.; several nieces and nephews; special friends and caregivers, Phillip and Trudy Quiroz.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Big Stone Gap First Christian Church.

Masonic services will be at 8 p.m. conducted by the Big Stone Gap Masonic Lodge #208.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the church with Minister Greg Townsend officiating.

Military services will follow at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, conducted by John Fox, Jr. VFW Post #5715.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be men of First Christian Church and members of Powell Valley Shrine Club, and special friends Elmo Winston, Jack Gembach, Jerry Potter, Denver Price and Joe Rasnick.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Powell Valley Shrine Club Transportation Fund, P.O. Box 113, Big Stone Gap, Va. 24219.
