Herman was born and raised in Fresno County, California in 1908. His parents, Anton and Anna Marie (Becker) Heinrich, emigrated from Kukkus, Samara, Russia around 1897 to America, married in Lincoln, Nebraska, and eventually settled in Fresno County, CA. They had six children: Amelia, Philip, Mary, Herman, Edith and LeRoy.

His first marriage was to Mollie Freehling (also born of Russian Parents: John and Elizabeth Freehling, with siblings: Maggie, Elisabeth, and Amelia) in December of 1928. They were married for about 19 years, before she died in Sacramento in November 1947.

Herman eventually remarried to a widow, Josephine Margaret (Bean) Sandstad, sometime after 1947. They were married for many years, and resided in the Oak Park area of Sacramento. Josephine was in poor health in her later years. Herman placed her in a hospital bed in their living room, and cared for her for many years. He had a small grocery store at 4100 33rd Street, called "The Grocery Basket," adjacent to the house and would go back and forth to check on her.

She passed away in 1976 and was interred in the Odd Fellows Cemetery beside her first husband, Alf Sandstad. Herman died in 1979, in Sacramento, and was buried in the Sanger Cemetery, in Sanger, Fresno County, CA, beside his first wife, Mollie.

Also interred in the Sanger Cemetery, are Herman's parents, Anton and Anna, brother Le Roy (and Le Roy's infant daughter, Sandra), and sister Edith (with her husband, George Thorpe).
