James married Sharlotte Johnson on December 18, 1827 in Holmes County, Ohio. Sharlotte died April 23, 1896, but Mr. Harper is still in the enjoyment of good health. The following children blessed their union: Ann, the wife of George Bell, of Holmes County, Ohio, died in Wood County in 1855; John died at the age of two an a half years; Mary Jane; Henry J. died December 7, 1894; Samuel J. lives in Weston Township; Harriet E. married Ellis Williams; Stephen Taylor lives in Weston Township; one other died in infancy. James and Sharlotte came to Wood County in 1852 and settled in Grand Rapids Township, from there they went to Weston Township. Mr. and Mrs. Barton were both members of the Disciples Church and he is a Democrat in politics.
