Captain John A. Benson (Ret.) Of Waltham, entered eternal rest peacefully late Friday evening October 22, 2010 surrounded by his loving wife and family at his home at the age of 83. Born on August 16, 1927 in Bridgeport, Conn., son of the late Hugo and Rita Benson, Captain Benson was raised and educated in Waltham and has been a resident ever since.
Captain Benson served honorably with the United States Army during World War II. A graduate of Mass Bay Community College and continued his education graduating from Babson Institute.
Captain Benson was employed with the City of Waltham Police Department serving in many capacities having been appointed a Patrolman on May 3, 1953, Police Sergeant on July 29, 1958, Lieutenant on October 8, 1967, and Captain on April 9, 1972. Throughout his tenure with the Waltham Police Department he was assigned as Liaison Officer to the Auxiliary Police Force, Personnel Assignments Officer, Inspectional Services, Detective Division and Commanding Officer of the Traffic Division.
Captain Benson received numerous citations and recognitions over his years of service including his voluntary gestures with the Auxiliary Police Force and the St. Judes CYO groups use of the operation of breathalyzer and laws of enforcement, his public relations gesture with the Warrendale Cub Scouts mini-soap box construction contest , his appreciation for commendable conduct with commencement exercises at Brandeis University and as a member of the Aleppo Temple assisting in coordinating a day at the circus for patrol boys and girls of Waltham. He was also very instrumental in the organizing of the Aleppo Temple's participation in the parades of Waltham .
A community and civic leader, Captain Benson was a member of the late Masons Waltham Triad Lodge AF & AM, was a lifetime Provost Guard with the Shriners International, the Emerald Society, the Scottish Rites, the Waltham Kiwanis Club, the Waltham Historical Society, The Charles River Valley Shrine Club, the Model T Club, Charter member of the National World War II Museum, Director of Police exhibits for the Waltham Museum, a member of the Waltham Police Patrolmans and Superior Officers Unions, the Massachusetts Coalition of Police Officers Union, and the Joseph F. Hill American Legion Post #156 in Waltham serving as Commander for 5 years, Chaplain, Band member, and as driver for the trolley to many local events. He donated much of his spare time volunteering at the Waltham Museum, and working around his house as a true handyman and jack of all trades, gardening, collecting and repairing antiques, and enjoyed playing the harmonica and banjo. He was also an advocate for many charitable organizations.
He will forever be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father, and grandfather, for his love of life, history, but most of all for his love of family. They will cherish the many memories of John spent at the ocean on Cape Cod during summers with family and friends, and the passion he had for his Antique 1920 Ford Model " T".
Captain Benson is survived by his loving wife of 59 years that he met while working on the family farm, Bridgina "Gina" M. (Deacon) Benson, his devoted children Michael Benson of Waltham, Stephen Benson and his wife Melanie of Morrisville, Vt., Brian Benson of Watertown, John Benson Jr. of Waltham, Wendy Perera and her husband Peter of Charleston, S.C., and his cherished grandchildren, Michael Jr., Christopher, Jason, Jeffrey, Jordan, Kelby, and Marissa Benson, Andrew and Isabella Perera. In addition he is survived by many nieces & nephews. Dear brother of the late Hugo Benson and Mary Bruno.
Relatives and friends were respectfully invited to attend Funeral Services from the Brasco & Sons Memorial, 773 Moody Street in Waltham on Monday morning Nov. 8 at 9 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Johns Life at Saint Judes Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham at 10:30 a.m.
Committal Services with Military & Police Honors followed at Mount Feake Cemetery in Waltham.
