Ernest (Smitty) Preston Smith

Ernest (Smitty) Preston Smith, 76, of 472 Dearborn Road, Evington, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, May 1, 2006, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the loving husband to Nannie (Nan) Cox Smith for 52 years.

Born January 7, 1930, in Botetourt County, he was a son of the late Parker Preston Smith and Thelma Sloan Smith. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, a retired employee of Homestead Materials Handling Co., and a U. S. Army veteran in the Korean War.

He was a loving father and was survived by two daughters, Loretta S. Mason and her husband Cornell of Lynchburg; and Donna S. Mays and her husband Mike of Evington, four brothers, Hubert C. Smith and his wife Roselle, Harrison Dudley and his wife Margaret, Carl Smith, Ira Smith and his wife Phyllis all of Bedford, two sisters, Eunice Bishop and her husband Richard of Wisconsin, and Patsy Arrington of Big Island. He was "Papa" to granddaughter Michelle Johnson and her husband Kevin, and "Big Papa" to great-grandsons Aaron T. Johnson and Isaac S. Johnson, and a host of special friends.

Two sisters; Beulah Cox and Helen Smith preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p. m. on Thursday, May 4, 2006, at Finch & Finch Chapel in Altavista by the Rev. Scott Childress. Interment will follow at the Cumbie Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Finch & Finch, Inc. Funeral and Cremation Service Altavista, and other times at the residence.
