Sister Rose Helene was born Hazel Lillian Paugh in Salina, Kansas. She had two brothers and a sister, Harry, who was my father, Guy, and Clare Nell. Hazel married James Clyde Vaughan at a young age, probably just out of High School. Her husband became ill with tuberculosis and they moved to Phoenix, Arizona in hopes the dry climate would help cure the disease. During that time they lived in a tent while he underwent treatment. Clyde died on April 6th, 1923 in Phoenix. Hazel took him home to Salina, and buried him in the Mount Calvary Cemetery. Not long after her husband died she decided to become a Catholic. In August of 1928 she entered the convent of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet-St. Louis Province as Mrs Hazel Paugh Vaughan. She then chose the name Rose Helene and made her final profession of vows on August 15, 1934. I think she chose the name Rose because that was my mothers name and she and my mom were pretty close. She received her bachelor degree in nursing from St. Louis University, and received her Masters degree from Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Her last assignment before she died was director of the School of Nursing at St. Joseph Hospital in Hancock, Michigan. The hospital is still open but is no longer a catholic facility.

Also, I would like to give a special thank you to photo volunteer Patricia Stout Raether for taking the time to stop and take the two photos of Sister Rose's final resting place. Hancock is located in the upper peninsula of Michigan, not far from Canada.

Note-June 15, 2013. While looking for my Mothers sister on the internet, I came across a signature of Sister Rose Helene from St. Joseph's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. She was also the director of nursing back then, at least the form she signed indicated she was. It was dated sometime in 1942. My wife was born in that same hospital in 1941. It is possible that Sister Rose knew her parents and maybe even held my wife when she was a new born baby. We will never know for sure. Now is that a coincidence or what! JP
