Gerald John Dick, 89, formerly of Sterling, passed from the loving arms of his family to the loving arms of the Lord on Oct. 28, 2010. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, at First English Lutheran Church. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
Gerald was born July 26, 1921 in Padroni to Margaret (Maggie) Wagner and Alex Dick. He attended schools in Padroni for all 12 years, graduating high school in 1939. All of his life , Gerald proudly sang the P-A-D-R-O-N-I fight song for everyone who would listen, and sometimes even when no one listened!
As a young man he farmed with his parents in Proctor until November 1942, when he joined the Army during World War II. After boot camp, Gerald joined the Army Air Corp. He was stationed in many places in the United States before being assigned to the South Pacific. He fought with the American Guerillas of Mindanao and was awarded the Bronze Star for Heroic Action. After the war ended Gerald was awarded a medal for Liberating the Philippines.
In July 1943, Mildred Schumann joined Gerald in Uvalde, Texas, where they were married. It was a love affair and marriage lasting more than 67 years and almost every day he told her, "I love you with all my heart and soul."
After the war Gerald farmed in Proctor for 10 years and both of their sons, Randy and Bruce, were born.
The family moved to Sterling in 1956 and farmed the Sugar Factory farm and ranched with Bill Thornburg for 30 years.
Gerald relished life and he loved family gatherings and getting together with friends. He never forgot his Padroni roots and loved living in Sterling for most of his life.
Gerald was active at First English Lutheran Church in Sterling in many ways throughout his life, helping dig the corner stone when they started to build, and as congregational chairman. He was a member of the Lutheran Hour Ministries. He served on the Production Credit Association Board for 13 years and was chairman of the #2 Ditch Board. Gerald was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The second love of his life, after his wife Mildred, was their boys. They farmed and ranched with their dad and he was very involved in their many interests. Always supportive of their church, 4-H and sports activities, he never missed a game from Pee Wee through Legion baseball and school sports. When it was game time, it was time to call it a day with the farming.
Gerald and Mildred enjoyed traveling together and this included many trips to California, and to Germany when Randy was stationed there. They spent time in California, New York City, Kansas City, Chicago, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.
Gerald and Mildred moved to Windsor in 2008 and have lived at Good Samaritan Water Valley, Senior Living Resort, to be closer to their families. They have missed their close friends in Sterling and have made many new friends in Windsor.
In September of 2009 Gerald was privileged to attend the Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C. for World War II Veterans. The main event was the World War II Memorial and it was just one way of saying, "Thank you for serving our Country."
Gerald is survived by his wife, Mildred; sons, Randy and his wife Dixie of Windsor, and Bruce and his wife Terri of Windsor; and grandchildren, Cara Dick of Gordon, Neb., Ryan Dick of Fort Collins and Bryan Dick of Windsor. He is also survived by sister-in-law Esther Dick and brother-in-law Lou Schlenz as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Elvina (Chris) Schott, Elfreda (Lou) Schlenz, and brother, Harold (Esther) Dick.
