Mildred (Mickey) Turner
Mildred Doris Stiles Turner was born July 16, 1912 in Seattle, Washington and came into the family of David and Mary Stiles, who lived south of Mohler, as an infant, only three days old, becoming the youngest of seven children.
She attended the Ochs School south of Mohler through the eighth grade and graduated in 1930 from Harrington High School. During her high school years, she lived with and helped the Anderson family in town and her parents drove in and took her home for the weekends. She was active in basketball, plays and declamation contests.
She attended Blair Higley Business College in Spokane, where she also worked at the Crescent Store, Desert Hotel and Jefferson Drug. She returned to Harrington to work for Brandt Klingel and later George Norin at Harrington Drug Co.
After her January 18, 1937 marriage to Darrel C. Turner (known as Bun), she continued to work at the drug store until the late 1940's when she began working at the Harrington Hardware and Implement, Co. while continuing at the drug store during the Christmas season. In later years, she worked for Genevieve H. Hose in dry goods and the liquor store in Harrington.
A member of the Harrington Community Congregational Church, she was active as a choir member many years and was memorial chairman from 1970 until recent years. She also belonged to the Women's Fellowship, was a 50-year member of Eastern Star and worthy matron of Bright Hope Chapter No. 79 O.E.S. Harrington, now Davenport Chapter No. 131 O.E.S. She was appointed to the library board in the 1930's replacing Vera Kriegler, and served for many years. She was an active member of the Harrington High School Alumni Association.
She and her husband, Harrington community members for almost all their lives, didn't have any children of their own but considered their pets as family and very dear to their hearts.
After her husband's May 17, 1991 death, Mickey visited her sister-in-law Dot Stiles on weekends and holidays and together joined a senior citizen's group and attended professional plays in Coeur d'Alene and Spokane. A special event together was a trip to Branson, Missouri. In later years, when Dot moved to Helena, Montana to be near her son, their visits became more difficult to arrange but she did visit often with the remaining Gerry Stiles family.
She turned to the Turner side of the family in Harrington, joining family gatherings along with George and Donna (Turner) Carpy, Kathy Carpy and Alan and Bonnie Stone. She attended many holiday dinners, special events and summer barbecues. She also enjoyed sporting and musical events as well as any school activity.
After being hospitalized five years ago, Bill Floyd volunteered to care for her, taking her on outings and including her in their Floyd family get-togethers and at many Gonzaga University basketball games.
Four days after attending this year's Fall Festival in Harrington, she became ill with pneumonia and required care at Lincoln Hospital, where she was moved to a swing bed and then to the nursing home.
Mrs. Turner died Monday, November 1, 2010 at the Lincoln Nursing Home in Davenport.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers Alfred, Earle, Francis and Leonard, and sisters Annie McKellips and Ethel Fiske. She leaves numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews and great-great-great nieces and nephews.
