Funeral services for longtime Lamar resident and businessman H. Dean Whitney were held at 2 p.m.
Monday, June 14, 1999, at the Lamar First Baptist Church. Rev. Dennis Bradley officiated with burial in the Fairmount Cemetery, Lamar.

Mr. Whitney, age 89, of 322 S. Main St., Lamar, Co., departed this life on Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at Sandhaven Nursing Home in Lamar following a recent illness.

Dean was born June 29, 1909, in Casey, Ill., the son of Albert Whitney and Vivian Fortney Whitney. He received his primary education through high school in Illinois. He later attended Barber School which enabled him to begin a career in barbering which spanned some six decades.

Dean entered the service of his country, serving honorably in the U.S. Army from Feb. 28, 1929, to Feb. 27, 1932. He attained the rank of private first class and served as an aircraft inspector. Following his military duty, Dean returned to Illinois and on April 16, 1934, was united in marriage to Juanita N. Stevens at Martinsville. Together they lived in Charleston, Ill., until moving to Milwaukee, Wis. in 1937. In 1940, the family moved to Batavia, Ill. and then in 1947 relocated to Lamar, Col., where Dean has made his home and barbered the last 50 plus years.

Dean was an active and faithful member of the Lamar First Baptist Church. A life member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective order of Elks, Lamar Lodge #1319, a longtime member of the Lamar Masonic Lodge #90 A. F. & A. M., and active member of the Lamar Noon Lions Club serving several offices, and a recent member of the Lamar Eagles Aerie #3898.

He is survived by his two children, Jay and wife Cathy Whitney of Osage Beach, Mo.; and Dianne and husband Sonny Heath of Las Vegas, Neb.; by 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one brother, Dale and wife Bea Whitney of Sedona, Ariz., by one sister, Venita and her husband Ray Kellogg of Sequim, Wash.; as well as by several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many many friends.

Mr. Whitney was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Vivian Whitney of Illinois; by his wife of 63 years, Juanita Whitney of Lamar on Aug. 10, 1997; and by one sister, Thelma Shreeves of Kansas City.
