Nelson D. Baird. After many years spent in cultivating the soil of any one vicinity, the average Michigan farmer is louth to turn over his life work to other hands, but on coming to the realization that the time has come for him to retire from active pursuits and settle down to the enjoyment that his years of toil have earned for him, he invariably retires to the nearest town or village and there becomes one of its best citizens. Among this class stands Nelson D. Baird, highly esteemed retired citizen of Milan and ex-soldier of the great Civil War, who for forty-four years cultivated the soil of Milan township.

Nelson is the son of David Baird and Susan Arnold Baird. Mr. Nelson Baird married at the age of 23 years at Sturgis, Michigan, to Miss Harriet Richardson on November 30, 1859. Harriet was born at Florence, St. Joseph County, Michigan, daughter of Dr. Nathaniel Richardson and Electa Ingersoll Richardson. Dr. Richardson, a pioneer physician and surgeon from Watertown, New York. Harriet died at the age of 27 years, leaving 2 children, Lena, the wife of Ed E. Ceas of Milan; and Frank, who is deceased.

Nelson remarried a second time to Clarisa "Clara" Elizabeth Bunce on January 24, 1866 in Dundee, Monroe County, Michigan. Clara is the daughter of Lathan Bunce and Elizabeth Lasher. Together they had 3 daughters; Hattie Elizabeth Baird who married Edgar Flicker, Jessie May Baird who had multiple sclersois never married and Ada Maude Baird who married Raymond H. Ellis. Clara died at the age of 29 in 1880.

Nelson remarried for a third time to Emma Elizabeth Hazen on December 2, 1884 in Milan, Monroe County, Michigan. Emma is the daughter of Daniel C. Hazen and Elizabeth Webster. No children were born to Nelson and Emma.

The family originated in the highlands of Scotland, and the Baird clan was always noted for its bravery and honor.
