Anna's parent's were on every last one of the censuses as Hoefs. A family descendant told me that she never heard the story of how some of the family chose to use the Haefs spelling whereas some of this family chose to keep the original spelling of Hoefs. The name is pronounced like Hafes with the A sound and it is speculated that, that is why some of them wanted the name spelled Haefs to make it look more like it sounds. Whatever. :-] Also just to keep it real interesting, the original spelling in Germany was believed to be spelled Höfs.
