Kenneth Octave "Kayo" Hass , 79, 712 34th Place, died at 11:32 A.M. Friday, October 21, 1994, at Fort Madison Community Hospital. His health had been declining since January 1993, turning serious October 15.
He was born January 4, 1915, at Norborne, MO., the son of William Henry and Lenoir Octavia Guental Hass. On May 27, 1947, he married Sarah Amelia Groesbeck at Cedar Falls.
A resident since 1931, Mr. Hass was a 1947 honors graduate of Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls with a bachelor of arts degree in science majoring in chemistry. He was employed at Lampe Drug for 53 years, retiring as manager of the photo department in 1986. He was a US Army Air Corp veteran of World War II, and a 50-year member of Claypoole Masonic Lodge No. 13 A.F. & A.M.
An active member of First Baptist Church, he was formerly a choir member and from the age of 15 he taught Sunday School, and was currently a member of the Board of Deacons. He was chairman of the Spanish Mission Board of the First Baptist Church and taught Sunday School in Spanish to the non-English speaking members after the Village Baptist Church had closed.
He had worked many years with the former Village Baptist Church, and served for several years as a volunteer under the direction of Rev. Sherburn Ray in Christian outmate ministry at the Iowa State Penitentiary.
Survivors include his wife, three sons, Ken Hass, San Jaun, Puerto Rico, Neth Hass, Anna, Illinois, and Tave Hass, Columbia, MO; one daughter Kara (Mrs. Caleb) Miller, Mechanicsburg, PA.; two sisters, Bobbie Collins, Des Moines, and Jeanne Power, Fort Madison; three granddaughters, one grandson, 14 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, William M. Hass.
Friends may call Monday at Barr Memorial Chapel, where the family will meet with friends from 7 to 8 P.M. and a Masonic service will be conducted at 7:30 Monday evening. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 25, at 10 A.M. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Kraus officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Circle, Oakland Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for the American Bible Society. Contributions my be left at Barr Memorial Chapel.
