Per information provided by Pat Whitley Croft who has copies of Berry Whitley's Pension Records were he states that he had resided in Ware County, Ga. all his life having been born there on June 15th, 1833. He stated that he enlisted in the 4th Georgia Reg.-Company "K" about the 4th of March of 1861 at Waresboro, Ga. He remained in this company for six months, then went to the 4th Georgia Cavalry under Capt. King. He served until General Lee surrender and he was discharge near Atlanta, Ga. He stated that his occupation was farmer. He also stated that he was applying for his pension based on old age, poverty, suffering from his vision being impaired and suffering with stricture of the urethra. He applied for his pension on January 15, 1898 and at this time he stated that he was only earning an annual income of $40.00 from farming and that he lived with his wife and one child and owned no property. He signed his application with his mark "x ". He applied for his pension in Ware County, Ga. The affidavit of physicians as to his physical health was sworn by Dr.'s J. H. Redding and G. P. Folks . They stated the following: "Applicant's claim for pension is based on impairment of vision and stricture of the Urethra and years of service as a confederate solider also age, infirmity." His witness statement was made by one J . A. Cason who at that time resided in Ware County, Ga. He stated that he had known Berry Whitley ever since 1861 when he served in the same company and regiment. That company and regiment being at Waynesville, Ga in Co. "E" 4th Ga. Calvary. He stated that Berry Whitley was a good solider. Berry Whitley received his pension in the years between 1898 and 1905.
