Samuel's father is thought to be Archibald Hewitt b. abt 1797 in NJ. His mother may have been Catherine Hughes of Cape May, NJ. They are listed together on the 1850 Gloucester Co. Residents. He enlisted during the Civil War in Salem in the month of June 1863 under Capt. C. Johnson. Samuel Hewitt was married to Sarah. They had a daughter Mary R. Hewitt who married Socrates Townsend Young. Sarah, Mary and Townsend are buried at Cedar Green Cemetery in Clayton, NJ. Samuel was a farmer. Samuel served in the Civil War PVT. Co. H 4th Regt. PA Cav. Samuel is buried in the oldest part of the cemetery which is across the street.
