Born in Sala Consilina, Salerno, Italy, the son of Francesco Antonio and Vincenza Bove Auleta. Michele arrived in the United States in 1872, with 18 cents in his pocket. He became a naturalized citizen in 1887. He was the husband of Agnesia Uliano and they had four children.

Michele Auleta owned a barbershop at 139 Bowery in for almost 50 years. Mr. Auleta was one of the most well known barbers on the east side. He was one of the founders of the Italian Hospital at 28th Street and Avenue A. He was a member of the Church of the Transfiguration, located at Mott and Park Streets and was a generous parishioner. Mr. Auleta was also a member of Torquato Tasso Society, Royal Arcanum and several other societies. He was very active in politics and cut the hair of President Teddy Roosevelt.

He was survived by his wife Agnesia nee Uliano Auleta, sons Abraham Petrarca Auleta, Vincent Auleta and Dr. Francis Auleta. It was reported in the March 29th 1914 edition of The New York Times, he left a large estate of over $100,000.
