August J. Stewart was born April 26, 1914 on the family farm near Independence, Kansas to Charles S. and Caroline (Brinkman) Stewart. He was reared on the family farm and attended the Maple Grove and Independence schools.
He married Ruth Inman-Harris on Easter of 1949. They made their home on the family farm which he has operated most of his life.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Independence, Kansas. In 1998, he was named Farmer of the Year by the Montgomery County Conservation District for his work in soil conservation.
Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife, Ruth of rural Independence, Kansas and one daughter, Mary Ann Stewart of Lawrence, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Carl A. Stewart.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service for August J. Stewart will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 11, 2002 at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home. Reverend Gary Brooks of the First United Methodist Church of Independence will officiate.
Mr. Stewart's register book will be available for family and friends to sign at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home on Sunday, March 10, 2002 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Monday, March 11, 2002 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
The family has suggested a memorial in Memory of August J. Stewart to the First United Methodist Church. Memorials may be left with the funeral home.
