Obituary:
JAMES PURCELL of Milltown died February 5 at the Charlotte County Hospital after a short illness. Mr. Purcell, 80 years old, was active up to a few weeks before his death. A fall down the cellar steps forced him to be hospitalized and death followed in a few days.
Born in Milltown, he was the last surviving member of a family of 13. He was the son of the late Dennis and Johanna (Bresnahan) Purcell of Tralee, County Kerry, near the Lakes of Killarney, who sailed from Ireland shortly after their marriage and were residents of Milltown.
Jimmie, as he was known to Border residents, worked in Rosie's Grocery store for years and later at Clark's Groceries in St. Stephen from where he retired a few years ago.
He was active in town affairs, having served on the Milltown Council for several terms and was a member of St. Stephen's Church, Milltown and the Holy Name Society, St. Stephen's chapter.
His wife Mary (Fitzsimmons) predeceased him several years ago.
Surviving are his son Maynard Sr. and two daughters, Eileen at home and Mrs. Clarence (Doris) Dougherty, Milltown, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held from his residence in Union Mills to St. Stephen's Church, Milltown, on Wednesday morning where Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. Dr. M. O'Brien. Interment was in the Catholic Cemetery.
Bearers were Harold Clark, W.T. Clark, Joseph Coffey, William Ryan, James Heffernan and George Gebhard.
His grandson Gerald Purcell of Moncton and Mrs. J. Shaw of Hartland, N.B. attended the funeral from out of town. (St. Croix Courier February 9, 1961)
