John was the son of Michael E. & Jane Cowan Melvin. He married Mattie Hicks, the daughter of Coleman & Martha Warren Hicks, on December 28, 1875 in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The couple were the parents of Virginia May, Robert B., John Coleman, Pansy Fay, James Edward, William L., Frank E., Walter Keith, Sterling I. and Joseph Melvin. John supported his large family by working as a railroad switchman.
The couple moved to Louisville and, later, were divorced. Mr. Melvin remained in Louisville. He passed away, at City Hospital, from the effects of lobar pneumonia, with a duration of five days. After funeral services, his remains were returned to Jeffersonville and laid to rest at Eastern Cemetery.

Inter: 01-23-1916. Some family trees list Jane's mother as Unknown and Elizabeth Finch as her stepmother. I do not know which trees are correct as I cannot find any marriage records for J.F. Cowan.
