VALPARAISO - Richard J. Grass, 87, Valparaiso, passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at the Horton VNA Hospice Center.

He was born March 26, 1921 in Valparaiso to Oscar E. and Mabel (Thineman) Grass, graduated from Washington Township High School, and served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Dick was a long-time farmer, Washington Township school bus driver for 32 years, and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wanatah.

On August 1, 1953, in Valparaiso, he married Marjorie H. O'Connor, who preceded him in death June 20, 2003.

Survivors include five children: Phillip Grass, John Grass and Patricia (Steve) Evans all of Wanatah, Diane (Mark) Matthys and Carol (Dennis) Misch both of Valparaiso; one sister, Erma Bessler of New Albany, Ind.; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by an infant son Dale Edward; a brother Lee; four sisters Eva Dowdell, Margaret Grass, Eileen Martin, Maralou Taylor; and daughter-in-law, Glenda Grass.

A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wanatah, the Rev. Kevin McCarthy officiating, with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday, 4 to 8 p.m., at Moeller Funeral Home, Valparaiso.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
