Twice widowed, Hope Taylor Watson Burrowes lived an eventful life. One of twin daughters born to Richard and Sarah (nee Hartshorne) Taylor in January 1721, Hope and her sister Deliverance were aptly named: their mother had been in labor when she fled to the Middletown stockade to escape the warring Navesink Indians. Deliverance may not have survived to adulthood, as there's little information about her. Hope, however, became a bride by the time she was 17, marrying sea captain John Watson c.1737. Believed to have been drowned at sea, his death left her a widow with at least two small children. On December 2, 1749, when she was still in her twenties, she wed John Burrowes, with whom she had had several more children during the course of their 36-year marriage. Burrowes, a prosperous miller who'd been dubbed "King Corn", suffered tremendous losses at the hands of the British during the American Revolution, which may have contributed to his death at 67. Predeceased by her second husband in 1785, Hope was buried beside him after her death seven years later.
