Richard's obituary in The Ellsworth American offers: "Born May 9, 1933, in Ellsworth, he was the son of Marvin "Pete" and Minnie A. Shorey Bragdon.
After moving to Portland at a young age, he was educated in local schools and was a 1951 graduate of Portland High School. From 1952 to 1954, he served in the United States Navy, and while stationed at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, met his future wife, Joan A. Millett, who was also serving at the training center. March 6, 1954, the couple married in Chicago. After Richard's discharge from the Navy, they returned to Portland, where Richard was employed with First National Stores. They later lived in Kittery a brief time before moving back to Portland. Since 1962, they resided in Rockland and most recently in West Rockport. Mrs. Bragdon died Dec. 21, 2006. For many years prior to his retirement, Richard was employed with the Maine Department of Labor as an apprenticeship coordinator. His hobbies included spending winters in Bradenton, Fla., and traveling with his wife. An accomplished gardener, he enjoyed and was successful growing vegetables, fruit trees and landscaping around his homes. Richard was a longtime member of the Elks No. 1008, Rockland, where he was a past trustee, the Winslow-Holbrook-Merritt American Legion Post No. One, Rockland, and Rockland Lodge of Masons, where this past summer he was awarded a 50-year pin."
