John Megel, aged seventy-nine years, a section foreman on the O & M, now the B & O, S.W. and Monon for 40 years, died suddenly of heart trouble Monday at the home of his daughter. Mrs. Henry Niemeyer, East Fifth street. For the last year his health had been failing and several days ago he contacted a cold which settled in the region of the heart. He ate supper with members of his family Monday night and at 11 o'clock he said he was feeling better. At 11:45 Mrs. Niemeyer went to his room to give him his medicine and found him dead. Apparently the end had come a few minutes before she entered the room.
Mr. Megel was born near Strausberg, Alsasce-Lorraine, then a province of France, November 24, 1836, making his exact age seventy-nine years, five months and twenty eight days. He emigrated to the United States in 1854 settling in Boston. He remained there about two years and at the age of twenty came to Indiana, settling near Hayden in Jennings county. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Knaub November 3, 1859.
Mr. Megal was engaged in agricultural pursuits and during the Civil War enlisted in the Thirty-First Indiana Infantry serving two years. He saw active service in Tennessee and Mississippi. At the close of the war he returned to Hayden and secured employment as a forman on a section crew on the O & M railroad. He was working for this comapany when the track was changed from a broad gauge to a standard gauge.
After working for the O & M for several years he secured employment as a section foreman with the Monon and lived at Cloverdale for a number of years. About nine years ago he came to this city and lived with his daughter.
He is survived by his widow, three sons; J.J. of Henning, Tenn., Joseph of Stinesville, Charles of Kokomo, three daughters; Mrs. Frank Motley of Frankfort, Mrs. James E. Corprew of Newport News, Virginia, Mrs. Niemeyer, this city and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will occur at 9 o'clock Thursday morning form the St. Ambrose Catholic church, conducted by the Rev. C. J. Clements. Burial in the Catholic cemetery.
