MARTHA ELIZABETH (McKENZIE) RAGSDALE
Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Ragsdale, 92, a Dallas resident for many years, who died at Austin Wednesday night, will be held at the Munger Place Methodist Church at 2 p. m. Friday, Dr. W. D. Bradfield of the theological faculty of Southern Methodist University, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be L. W. Blaylock, Ralph Porter, Frank Reedy, Ben H. Fly, J. R. Bradfield and Arthur Everts.
Mrs. Ragsdale was born in Tennessee on Oct. 22, 1835, the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. J. W. P. McKenzie. Her parents moved to the Indian Territory, where they were missionaries, while she was still an infant. In 1839, they removed to Red River County, and two years later established McKenzie College, which was one of the State's leading educational institutions until broken up by the Civil War.
Miss McKenzie was married to Smith Ragsdale on Oct. 2, 1850. He was one of the teachers in the college. They took their bridal trip to Fayette County on horseback. Ragsdale was a Confederate soldier during the Civil War, and after the conflict he and his wife taught school in many Texas towns. More than twenty-five years ago they moved to Dallas. He died here Jan. 5, 1909. They had no children.
Surviving are a brother, J. T. McKenzie, who lives near Clarksville at the old McKenzie home.
