John Patrick "Pat" Riley was born on 13 March 1884 and was the fifth of the eight children of John Joseph and Margaret Ellen Riley. He was probably born in the same household as the rest of his siblings, which was a log cabin on the Riley Ranch/Farm. He grew up in the Riley household, and he did get married in 1913 at the age of about 29. He also had two boys, John Patrick and James Maurice. He lived at the Riley Ranch/Farm until he was married and then he and his family got their own place, but remained in the same general area. He inherited land from his father and his portion of land was in DeWitt County, Texas.

In the early part of his life, Pat did attend school at the community of Cabeza, which his father helped establish. Being part of a family of 6 children and living on a farm, he probably had work responsibilities as well as having siblings to play with.

John Patrick Riley married Nora Agnes Foley on 17 July 1913. They were married in Utica, Oneida County, New York. Nora Foley immigrated to the USA from Cork County, Ireland in 1911. It is not known how John Patrick Riley met or made arrangements to marry Nora, but Pat did travel to New York for the marriage. Also, it is not known if Nora came to Texas before they were married; it is felt that she did not, that perhaps this was an arranged marriage.

In the 1920 census, John Patrick "Pat" Riley lists his occupation as farmer. So it is assumed that he is working his land, and is probably raising cattle on it since his father became a cattleman and had success. John Patrick Riley became foreman of the Runge Ranch which was a very large ranch, being over 100,000 acres. The time frame for this foreman activity is not known, but the fact that he was foreman for such a large ranch does indicate that he knew the cattle business. Pat was a "go-getter"; he was one of those people that got things done. The family looked to him as being a leader; apparently he was very entrepreneurial in his active life; at one time he was County Commissioner. So he was definitely a leader and the family did depend on him.

John Patrick Riley died on 13 March 1933, 13 March being the same day that he was born. He was 49 years old at the time of death; he is buried in the Runge Catholic Cemetery.
