He had been a patient at an Olney nursing home the past six years, after suffering a stroke.
Mr. Yates was for many years a member of the Wayne County ASC Committee, and served as its chairman. During World War II he serced as a member of the Wayne County Selective Service board.
He was born in Wayne County June 1, 1890, the son of Luther M. and Grace Orr Yates.
He was married to the former Mamie Zimmerman.
He was a member of the Indian Prairie Baptist church near Rinard, where he was very active as long as his health permitted.
Mr. Yates spent his entire life in the Rinard vicinity.
Surviving are his widow; five sons, Leo, Robert, Earl, Roy, and Cass; three daughters, Mrs. Norman Stanford, Mrs. J. T. George, and Mrs. Wayne Potts; one sister Mabelle Cisne; 24 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Two grandsons were reared in his home: James D. Yates, and Orin Guy Yates.
Two sons James and Orin, were both lost at sea in World War II aboard the U.S.S. Simms.
Funeral services were conducted from Nales Funeral Home with interment in Indian Prairie cemetery.
