SOUTH BEND - Professor Joseph X. Brennan, residing in South Bend, passed away on October 25, 2010 at his home in South Bend. He was 86 years old. Dr. Brennan was born June 24, 1924 in Providence, RI, the son of James and Josephine Brennan. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in 1945 from Providence College and his Master's Degree in 1949 from Brown University. He then went on to earn his Ph.D. in English from the University of Illinois in 1953, where he specialized in Renaissance Rhetoric. Dr. Brennan did one year of postdoctoral research in Europe under a Fulbright Scholarship at the University of Florence, Italy, and a second year at the University of Gottingen, Germany.

Dr. Brennan came to this area in 1955 when he joined the University of Notre Dame as a professor of English. He specialized in Renaissance Rhetoric; American Literature 1800-1950; The Realistic and Naturalistic Novel; The Existential Novel; Science, Technology and Values in American Literature; and Psychological Concepts as Form in American Literature. Dr. Brennan published many articles in these fields, directed 20 Ph.D. dissertations, and inspired many students in his 38 years as a Professor at Notre Dame. In 1985 he was again awarded a grant from the Fulbright Commission to return to Europe, where he served as Senior Lecturer at the University of Coimbra, Portugal.

On December 21, 1960, in Sacred Heart Parish at the University of Notre Dame, he married Dr. Sheilah O'Flynn Brennan, who survives. Together, Joseph and Sheilah were devoted parents to their two sons. Avid gardeners, they maintained extensive and glorious flower gardens that surrounded their white cape house. Joseph also loved classical music and owned an extensive record and CD collection. In addition to his loving wife, Sheilah, Professor Brennan is survived by two sons, Dr. Ciaran J. (Kathryn) Brennan of Essex, VT and Keven J. (Robin) Brennan of Burbank, CA; five grandsons: Ian, Nathaniel, Jeremy, Riley, and Flynn; and two brothers, James Brennan of Cumberland, RI, and William Brennan of Attleboro, MA. He was preceded in death by his elder sister, Marguerite, and by another sister, Kathleen, who died as a child.
