He resided prior to New Jersey directly across the ( South ) Delaware River at Bristol Twp., Bucks Co., PA. He was a Major in the First Battalion of the Bucks Associators. Later promoted to Lt. Col and Col in 1777.
Joe Jr. in 1800 was a clerk of the county of Burlington, New Jersey. United States Attorney of the District of New Jersey. He was captain in McPherson's Regiment of Blues as early as 1798 and 1804 appointed aide on the staff of the Governor of New Jersey with the rank of colonel. 1823 elected as a Republican to the United States Senate.
On September 19, 1793, McIlvaine married Miss. Maria Reed in New Jersey, daughter of Bowes Reed, Secretary of State of New Jersey, and niece of Joseph Reed, Continental Congressman and Governor of Pennsylvania.
They had ten children:
