The passing of Charles E. Walton last Friday evening after a short illness means that Monticello las lost one of its finest men of pioneer stock. Altho in failing health for the past few months, Mr. Walton has been seen about town almost daily and will be sadly missed by family and friends. Son of C.E. and Jane McKetchnie Walton. His parents were called to settle in Woodrull when he was 8 years of age. The family came to San Juan in 1879 with the group that came thru "The Hole in the Rock". He was 12 years old the day they crossed the river at the foot of the Hole in the Rock. They settled at Bluff. He was with the first five families that moved to Monticello in 1886 and was responsible for giving Monticello its name. January 28, 1896, on his 28th birthday he was married to Emma Louise Hyde. To them was born one son and four daughters, all of whom survive. Wm. C. Walton, Pearl Walton, and Olive Allen, all of Monticello, Mrs. Alvin Bailey of Salt Lake City and Mrs. Ila Belak of Naturita, Colorado. They celebrated their golden anniversary last year. Mr. Walton was the first postmaster of Monticello, which he held for 35 years.
