Joseph moved with his family to Suffield, CT. in 1670, but was driven out by indians during the King Phillip's War. He returned to Suffield in 1676. His homestead, with that of brother Judah & brother-in-law Edward Smith, all lay contiguous along the banks of the Connecticut River. He was made a freeman in 1681. He died at the age of 37, perhaps as a result of injuries received in the war with the indians.
