A sad story: Emily C Grant married Reuben C Johnston in 1858 and had a baby girl, Fannie Alice in Dec of that year. In May, 1861, they had a baby boy, Thomas Jefferson Johnston. Duty called, and in Apr 1862, RCJ left to serve in the Confederate Army.

Baby Fannie Alice died in Aug, 1862 and Emily herself died in September, leaving a young son, TJ alone for his father to raise. Records show that RCJ was discharged in Sep 1862, perhaps because of this double loss, but he served again later during the war.

After the war, RCJ, now a widower, married Martha Wynn, in 1866 or 1867, and went on to have a large family of half-siblings for young TJJ.
