He was born on June 1, 1921, to John W. and Minerva (Laird) Bookwalter at there home in Burchard. He attended Bookwalter Country School and then grades 9-12 in Barneston, and graduated in 1939. He was stationed in England during World War II. After the service, he worked in California and Kansas City as an aircraft sheet metal specialist. He also worked as a grain and livestock farmer from 1959 to 1979.
He married Margaret Rinne on March 25, 1955, at the Salem UCC Church at Steinauer. He spent 31 years as a winter resident in Mesa, Ariz. He coached the American Legion boys baseball team and the girls softball team in Summerfield, Kan. He was also a avid golfer and sports enthusiast.
He was a member of the Bookwalter Church and later a member of the Burchard Methodist Church in Burchard. He was also a member of the American Legion in Wymore, Master Mason for 60 years, member of the Arab Shrine of Topeka, Kan., and a Kansas York Rite Member.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Minerva Bookwalter; sisters, Launa Jensen, Elizabeth Reimer; and brothers, Dean and Wayne Bookwalter.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; one niece, four nephews and many friends.
