Marshall D Warren was the son of Nathaniel Warren and Laura Ann Fitch. The family moved from Palmyra, Wayne County, New York before 1850 and eventually settled in Rock County, Wisconsin. Marshall married Margaret Huntley there and 2 sons were born to them - George Marshall and William H Warren. Marshall D Warren and his family moved to Fountain, Colorado sometime after 1870 and he died there in 1876.

His wife Margaret remarried in Colorado in 1880 and married James A Neff (1839-1904). She died in Ramsey County, Minnesota in 1909. Her son Warren H Warren died in 1933 in Minnesota.

Marshall was a veteran of the Civil War and enlisted in Company G, Wisconsin 13th Infantry Regiment on Sep 19, 1861 and was mustered out on Dec 4, 1865. Source: Roster of Wisconsin Volunteers: War of the Rebellion. He was promoted to the rank of Full Principal Musician for the regiment on Sep 1, 1863..
