Alexander VanMeter, the son of Shelton VanMeter and Nancy Downs VanMeter, was born on November 4, 1857 in Grayson County, Kentucky. He was married twice.

Alexander's first wife was Elizabeth Jane Decker, who was born on July 22, 1861. They were married about 1879. At the time of the 1880 Census of Rock Creek, Grayson County, Kentucky the Alexander Vanmeter family consisted of: A. (Alexander), a farmer, age 23; and his wife E. J.(Elizabeth Jane), a house keeper, age 19. Both were born in Kentucky with their parents born in Kentucky.
Elizabeth Jane and Alexander were the parents of the following children born in Grayson County:

Elizabeth Jane Decker VanMeter died on June 22, 1887. She and her children are buried in the McGrew Cemetery west of Kentucky Highway 259 near the Edmonson County line.

His second wife was Pauline Ann McGrew, the daughter of Valentine H. McGrew and Sarah A. (Unknown) McGrew. She was born on February 20, 1869 in Peonia, Grayson County, Kentucky. Pauline MaGrew and Alexander VanMeter were married about 1888. They were the parents of the following children born in Grayson County:

Alexander VanMeter died at the age of 64 in Grayson County on May 9, 1923. He was buried as Alex VanMeter in the Antioch General Baptist Church on Highway 88 southeast of Peonia, Grayson County, Kentucky.
