Alva O. Mefford was born December 2, 1876 at Albia, Iowa, and died at his home in Guide Rock, Nebraska, April 13, 1938, aged 61 years, 4 months and 11 days. When he was four years of age, the family came West, and settled in Webster county, where he has spent the remainder of his life.
On March 2, 1909 he was united in marriage to Miss Susie Perry, and established a home in the Garfield Neighborhood, southwest of Guide Rock, where they lived until February, 1930, when they discontinued farming and moved to their home in town, where his death occurred. To this union was born four children who survive him.
Alva, as we knew him in our daily contact and in business relations, was honest, courteous and industrious, and was always ready to lend a helping hand to h hose who were in need. He was quite and unassuming in his make-up. He never publicly confessed his faith in Christ, nor was he identified with any church, but was a believer in the God of Heaven, and in the divinity of Jesus Christ. He made a valiant fight for life, but his natural forces were not able to overcome the malady which was so deeply seated that no human skill was able to overcome it. He was taken to the University Hospital at Omaha, but there was nothing that could be done, and he came back home to await the inevitable.
The funeral services were held Friday afternoon at two o'clock in the Christian church, conducted by the pastor of the church, who spoke words of comfort to a large congregation of neighbors and friends who gathered to pay a last tribute of respect, from the words of Paul in Romans 8:24 "For we are saved by hope." The music was furnished by a ladies quartette, with Miss Dalton at the piano. The floral offering was very beautiful. Pall bearers were from among his neighbors and friends. Interment was in the Guide Rock cemetery.
He leaves to mourn, his loving companion: two sons, Tracy of Nyssa, Oregon and Glen of Guide Rock; two daughters, Mrs. Nora Armstrong and Mrs. Maxine Howe of Guide Rock; seven grandchildren; his aged father, who is quite ill at Red Cloud, and his step mother; two brothers, Jesse Mefford of Oklahoma and Albert of Guide Rock; three sisters, Mrs. Elsie Shidler of Garfield, Mrs. Cora Drake of Washington, and Mrs. Carrie Perry of Superior, Nebraska, besides many friends.
