Nobility. Born in Linz as the son of Ferdinand I and Anna Jagiello. He married Philippine Welser in secret in 1557. The emperor was only informed two years later and legitimized the marriage in 1561. After his father's death, he became stadtholder of Tyrol and Further Austria. After Philippines death, he remarried Anna Katharina Gonzaga who bore him three children, including the future empress Anna.
