Carl John Hoffman, 69, of Milan, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, 7th Street Campus, Moline.

Memorial services are 4 p.m. Friday at Salem Lutheran Church, Moline, where he was a member. The Rev. Tom Peterson will officiate. A fellowship gathering will be held at the church immediately following the memorial service. Memorials may be made to the family for the planting of a memory tree, the Elks Crippled Children's Fund or the Milan American Legion. Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Oct. 28, 1934, in Flint, Mich., son of Frank J. and Mary Wright Hoffman. He married Merry Ellen Beatty May 22, 1953, in Iowa City. She died in 1996.

He was employed by John Deere for 23 years, retiring in 1987 as a manufacturing engineer. He served with the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of the Rock Island Elks Lodge, member of the Milan American Legion and Rock Island Moose Lodge and was a former member of the Andalusia Lions Club. He enjoyed making wooden toys and was a computer buff.

Survivors (and spouses) include his son, Doug (Lisa) Hoffman, East Moline; sister, Theresa Dally, Apache Junction, Ariz.; brother, Joseph (Bert) Hoffman, East Moline; grandchildren, Carl John ``C.J.,'' Samantha and Jason; sister-in-law, Marjorie Miles, Bettendorf; nieces, Donna and Pam; and nephews, Mike and Wayne. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Josephine, Marion and Betty.
