Theresia Legat was born in Petrach House, Gorje, Slovenia to Blasius and Ursula Legat. Theresa Legat immigrated with her brother, Valentine, arriving in New York June 4, 1873, on the ship, Samaria, along with three Smoley families, Gregor & his wife Ursula and their daughter, Agnes, and John Smoley, Math & Mary Smoley also many others who settled in St. Stephen including her future brother-in-law, the Mathias Ohmann family and Mary Smoley who married Thomas Oman.

Theresa married Andrew Zwan 2 1/2 years later who got sick (appendicitis) and died a year after the marriage. Anchka Petrich said "How could they take a sick man in a lumber wagon to St. Cloud to a doctor. I don't even think there was a road back then." They had to ride a horse back to St. John's for a priest. Theresa prayed and worried that her husband would die before the priest came to give him the last rites. She asked, "Oh, God, what can I give you? I haven't anything, but on Easter, I usually get meat. I offer that up to you. She made a vow that if the priest would come in time to give the last sacraments to her husband, she would never eat meat again on Easter Sunday. The priest arrived in time and she never ate meat again on that holiday. Then she married 10 Jan 1876 to Simon Oman in St. Stephen, MN and had a very large, successful family.
