Earl was born and lived his younger life on his parents farm on 108th Street North of Otsego Michigan. He attended Gates country school until 11 years of age. While in the sixth grade his father traded the farm for a house at 116 North Wilmont Street in Otsego Michigan. After finishing the ninth grade he quit school, and at age 16 started a job in the onion fields near Orangeville Michigan. He worked for a dollar a day, ten hour days, six days a week. At the age of 19 Earl quit and went to work in Battle Creek at the Weston Biscuit Company making cookies. On April 23, 1941 he was drafted into the United States Army. On April 24, 1943 he was discharged and went to work at the egg filler division of the Mac Sim Bar Paper Mill. In November of 1943, he married Mable L. Kurtz. Two years later he quit work at the Mac Sim Bar Paper Mill and went to work at the Allied Paper Mill on Helen Ave. in Otsego Michigan. In 1957 the mill closed and reopened under the name of Silvercote, where he worked for a year until it also closed. In January 1962 he went to work for the National Water Lift Co. in Kalamazoo and was laid off in March of the same year. In July, 1962 he began work at the Waste Water Treatment Plant for the City of Otsego and remained there until his retirement on August 31, 1984. He lived at 208 North Grant Street, Otsego Michigan with his wife since 1945 until his death, January 5th 2003.
