Silas York was in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He enlisted as a private for 3 years in Company F, 5th Regiment Illinois U.S. Cavalry on September 14, 1861 in Robinson, Crawford County, Illinois. He mustered in on October 15, 1861 at Camp Butler, Sangamon County, Illinois. Silas was 23 years old, single, a farmer, 5'-4 1/2" height, dark hair, gray eyes, dark complexion. His nativity was Illinois. He reenlisted as a veteran for 3 years on January 1, 1864 at Clear Creek, Warren County, Mississippi and mustered in on January 25, 1864 in Hebron, Lawrence County, Mississippi. He mustered out of service on October 27, 1865 in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois by Captain Pomeroy.
