Lovett was the son of Peter Dillashaw (1800-1869) and Mary Graham Dillashaw (1805-1874). His death certificate named Mississippi as the place of birth, but in three census reports it was South Carolina. He served in the Confederate forces during the Civil War.

In the 1880 census Lovett was a farmer in Bosque County, Texas. In the 1910 census Lovett was living in Greenville, Hunt County, and working as an insurance agent.
