John's parents died when he was a small boy and he was raised by friends of the family. He was a farmer in Preble County when he enlisted in 1861 in the 71st Ohio Volunteers, as a drummer boy and private. John became quite ill after the battle of Shiloh but managed to return to his regiment, only to be taken prisoner and was later paroled. He remained with the 71st for the rest of the war and was mustered out in November 1865.

While still in the service, in 1864, John married his sweetheart Sarah Elizabeth Hamilton. They raised a family in Preble County after the war. Due to injuries from the war John had to abandon farming and they moved to Darke County near Arcanum, and then later Dayton where he was a house painter. In 1910 they moved to Cleveland to be with his children.

Gravesite Details

On the headstone John's surname is "Pyles". However, the name he used and signed his letters and documents was "Piles". Perhaps the "Pyles" spelling was a variant later used or an engraver's error.
